Cobalt is a brittle and hard grey metal, that is quite unreactive. Due to its resistance to oxidation and its hardness, it is used in electroplating. Another characteristic property of cobalt is that it is ferromagnetic. When alloyed with iron, nickel and other metals, it forms Alnico, a material with great magnetic strength. Alnico has a variety of important uses including use in jet engines. A radioactive isotope, cobalt-60, is a source of gamma radiation and consequently is used as a radiotherapeutic agent in the treatment of cancer.
